Serving the residents in multiple ways, this Community Center/Storm Shelter was a welcome addition to De Kalb.

Our Solution

The City received a grant for the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs for a community center/storm shelter. A site was selected with open property adjacent to the downtown area. The community center which also serves as the storm shelter was located to provide easy access to all citizens. This 1,000 SF community center/storm shelter addition includes a large meeting/ shelter room, kitchenette, restroom, storage room and mechanical closet. The project also included a parking lot and emergency power generator.

The design of this building involved six professional disciplines – architectural, civil, electrical, mechanical, geotechnical and structural engineering. Hayter Engineering managed the communication, coordination and execution of services for all of these disciplines.
